چکیده مقاله:

Background and Objective: Nowadays linear alkyl benzene sulfanate (LAS) is widely used in the production of various detergents. The purpose of this study was to assess the health and ecological hazards of this pollutant on target organisms such as fish and daphnia in the Doroodzan Dam water. Materials and Methods: According to the research objective and given existing restrictions, 21 water samples were collected in September 2018 from 7 selected stations based on the source of contamination in Doroodzan dam.  Water quality parameters including pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), potential Redox (ORP), Total dissolve solid (TDS) and Electrical conductivity (EC) was measured at the site. The amount of linear alkyl benzenesulfonate (LAS) was measured using an optimized methylene blue method after transferring samples to the lab. Then ecological and health risk assessment was performed by calculating the RQ index (risk index). Results: The results showed that the mean of  pH, EC, TDS, salinity and DO were 8.88, 732.19 µs/cm,  482.49, 366.16 and 6.87 mg/L, respectively. The highest and lowest concentrations of LAS were 0.039 and 0.055 mg/L, respectively. The results also showed that there is a significant relationship between LAS concentration and pH. The results of the risk assessment showed that the health risk index in all stations is less than 0.1, while the ecological risk index except at station 7, are in low risk level. Conclusion: In general, the results show that the RQ index in the Droodzan Dam water is in appropriate range and in the low risk level. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct long-term studies in this field to ensure the persistence of optimal water conditions in the dam ecologically and health-wise.

Effects and risk assessment of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates in agricultural soil. 5. Probabilistic risk assessment of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates in sludge-amended soils.

Linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) can be found in high concentrations in sewage sludge and, hence, may enter the soil compartment as a result of sludge application. Here, LAS may pose a risk for soil-dwelling organisms. In the present probabilistic risk assessment, statistical extrapolation has been used to assess the risk of LAS to soil ecosystems. By use of a log-normal distribution model,...

Screening test for assessment of ultimate biodegradability: linear alkylbenzene sulfonates.

A relatively simple shake-flask system for determining CO2 evolution was developed to assess the ultimate biodegradability by soil and sewage micro-organisms of chemicals which enter the environment. Linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) were used as model compounds to evaluate the method and were found to undergo substantial biodegradation in this dilute system. At the 30 mg/liter test concentr...

Biodegradation of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates in sulfate-leached soil mesocosms.

Aromatic sulfonates (R-SO(3)(-)) can be used as sulfur sources by sulfate-starved bacteria in laboratory cultures and the corresponding phenols are excreted from the cells. The present study was conducted to demonstrate whether such desulfonation reactions also occur in sulfate-leached agricultural soil, where desulfonation of organic sulfur compounds may have agronomic importance as a S source...

Effects and risk assessment of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates in agricultural soil. 3. Sublethal effects on soil invertebrates.

Sewage sludge applied to agricultural soils often contains considerable amounts of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS). Toxic effects of LAS on soil organisms should, therefore. be evaluated to ensure safe use of sewage sludge as a fertilizer. In this study, dose-response relationships for the toxicity of Na-LAS to six species of soil invertebrates (survival, reproduction, and growth) were est...

Effects and risk assessment of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates in agricultural soil. 1. Short-term effects on soil microbiology.

Linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) may occur in sewage sludge that is applied to agricultural soil, in which LAS can be inhibitory to biological activity. As a part of a broader risk assessment of LAS in the terrestrial environment, we tested the short-term effects of aqueous LAS on microbial parameters in a sandy agricultural soil that was incubated for up to 11 d. The assays included 10 mic...

Health and Ecological Risk Assessment of Heavy Metal Pollution in Esfarayen Surface Soils

Introduction: Due to the continued urbanization and industrialization in most parts of the world, metals are constantly being introduced into the soil environment and posing a major threat to human health. The purpose of this study was to investigate the contamination of Esfarayen surface soils with heavy metals and its hazards to human health. Methods: Surface soil samples were collected from ...
